City of Naga, Cebu |
The word Naga, came from the name of a tree, which before was abundant in Naga. It is the Narra Tree, our national tree, which in Cebuano is called as "Naga". Naga our city is a progressive city located twenty one kilometers at the southern part of Cebu Province.
Not to be confused with the Naga,City located in Luzon, Naga is a municipality in Cebu Province before, but now it is newly recognized as one of the newly proclaimed cities in the province of Cebu. It is a part of a metropolitan area informally referred to as Metro Cebu. City of Naga, Cebu(as how we call it) consists of 28 barangays, namely;: (a.)Alpaco, (b.)Bairan, (c.)Balirong, (d.)Cabungahan, (e.)Cantao-an, (f.)Centarl Poblacion, (g.)Cogon, (h.)Colon, (i.)East Poblacion, (j.)Inoburan, (k.)Inayagan, (l.)Jaguimit,(m.) Lanas, (n.)Langtad, (o.)Lutac, (p.)Mainit, (q.)Mayana, (r.)Naalad, (s.)North Poblacion, (t.)Pangdan, (u.) Patag, (v.) South Poblacion, (w.)Tagjaguimit, (x.)Tangke, (y.)Tina-an, (z.)Tuyan, (a.1)Uling, (b.1)West Poblacion. These 28 barangays helped Naga Become a City. Naga is also called as the "industrial city" of Cebu, because of its manufacturing plants and power plants.
The first Cement Factory, which is the Apo Cement was established in the City of Naga, in barangay Tina-an whose product was the first cement used in the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California U.S.A. Aside from the manufacturing plants in the City of Naga, it also have power plants which provides electricity to the whole province and to our fellow Naganians. The SALCON and KEPCO are the power plants of Naga in barangay Colon, which really is a big help in maintaining enough electrical power supply to the whole province.
In religious aspect, Naganians won't be behind from others. Naganians are naturally religious. Their patron saint is no other than Saint Francis of Assisi. Fr.Santos Maranon designed the 17th century church, made of coral stone and hard wood which was built by Fr. Simeon Aguirre, the first Spanish priest with the parishioners providing for the free labor. Now, it is headed by four priest, Rev. Fr. Melchor L. Urgel is the parish priest. Aside from the historical church of Naga, people from other barrios, are looking forward to visit its plaza also known as "BAY WALK". The bay walk or the city's plaza is located along the highways and coastal area of Naga. As what other people say, bay walk is name as bay walk, because it is near the bay where people enjoy to walk and have some fun. You can see the Balintawak Shrine as you enter the plaza and at night, people experience a different scenario, for all the lamp posts are being lighted up which give a romantic, cozy taste to the people enjoying the place.
During October10, Naganians celebrate its town fiesta which Honor their patron saint, Saint Francis of Assisi. And during December23, they celebrate its own Festival; the Dagitab Festival, dagitab for it means light or "KAHAYAG" in Cebuano. The highlight of these meaningful events for me is the Fireworks!!!!! The officials in the City of Naga, especially to the city mayor really make it a point to have a fabulous and magnificent fireworks during or at the end of the event.
Today, my city is headed by Hon. Valdemar M. Choing our owcity mayor and Hon. Delfin Senoir our own city Vice-Mayor. And as time pass, City of Naga is successfully progressing for its betterment.
